Okay, this was fun, entertaining, thought provoking, and everything else required to make me sit down and read a book in a day, which I did. I'm over 30 years too late, but I'd love to be Portia Adams. Here's a young woman with an above average ability to reason and discern details, yet suffers sufficient self-doubt and emotional turmoil to round out a character I'd love to know. Then again, I had the opportunity to get to know her within this well-crafted book that's actually multiple mysteries. Well done.

Jewel of the Thames A Portia Adams Adventure Volume 1 Angela Misri Sydney Smith 9781927746424 Books Reviews

It is a somber time for 19-year-old Portia Adams. Abandoned (except when he needs money) by her abusive stepfather and now orphaned by the death of her mother, Portia realizes she will have to abandon her dreams of higher education and go to work. Then she discovers, when her mother's will is read, that she has inherited property in London and also acquired a guardian, the glamorous but distant Mrs. Jones. After she and Mrs. Jones depart Portia's hometown of Toronto and arrive in England, Portia is further astonished to find out that the property is none other than 221B Baker Street, once the home of her grandfather Dr. John Watson!

Portia's immediate destination is Somerville College, where she studies law, but her fine observational skills involve her in three different mysteries in this first book of a projected five young-adult series. As she sharpens her deductive skills, she befriends the young neophyte policeman downstairs, and increasingly wonders about the mysterious Mrs. Jones, who provides a big piece in the solution of the mystery of Portia's grandparents. She's a great character, at once intelligent but still human, strong but sympathetic. I love the fact that she goes to Somerville, the alma mater of Dorothy L. Sayers and Vera Brittain, and that she's an introvert who loves books. A big plus is the cover of the book, which has a retro-Nancy Drew type feel to it combined with a modern, dreamy sensibility done in silhouette. Can't wait for the rest!
This is a delightful piece of Sherlock Holmes pastiche. Skilled writing and deft characterization bring 1930s London to life in Misri's casebook of mysteries.
This book is a great introduction to the world or Portia Adams. I can not wait for more in the series.
"Jewel of the Thames" is a delightful mystery that is well written. There are three separate cases in the novel that are the focus of the main character, Portia Adams, a young woman whose mother has died and, through a set of circumstances, relocates to London. I don't want to tell a new reader too much -- it will spoil the fun. I'd prefer that you buy the book yourself and enjoy the reading and the surprises along the way.
Oh, this was fun! I loved Portia like I haven't any character for a long time. (I'll keep the rest of this vague to avoid spoilers.)And the supporting cast shows a lot of promise, too--I'll definitely read the next book--can't wait to see how the slow-burning romantic embers catch fire. I will say that I could see the grand finale of the third case coming--perhaps at the end of the first case, but I don't think that ruined anything for me; rather, it made the getting there even more fun.
A really delightful little book, with an heir of Baker Street taking the lead. Portia is a fun character, and is surrounded by a very likable cast. I hope for some more depth in future stories, but even so, I enjoyed this book as is. Given that she discovers her heritage at the end of the book, I would like to see how she further deals with the legacy she's inherited, and how others interact with her because of it. There was some in this book, but not too much. The cases themselves are rather light and largely solvable by the reader, but they aren't boring because of it. My major caveat is the history of Adler- why must everyone persist in making her a criminal? Does no one actually READ Scandal in Bohemia? Despite my continued irritation over this fact, I still liked the book. Overall, I'm going to enjoy hunting down the rest of these books (Canada, please, give them to the rest of the world!) and exploring the rest of the series.
