An Ancient Evil hooked me and brought a smile to my face on the very first page. If you are not familiar with Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, this is nothing more than a mystery book set in Medieval England. If you are intimately familiar with Chaucer’s pilgrims, it is so much more. Doherty’s original mystery portion of the book is fun and entertaining. His treatment of the pilgrims is, to me, what makes the book and the series. In Chaucer’s work, most of the pilgrims en route to Canterbury cathedral are a random collection of travelers making their way to a common destination. In Doherty’s universe, many of the pilgrims have a past connection, even if they don’t realize it. For those familiar with the General Prologue, Doherty does a fabulous job of dropping random nods to Chaucer’s work in terms of the pilgrims’ descriptions and personalities. The uninitiated probably won’t get the subtleties that are major plot points in character interaction.
I’d love to give this six stars.

Excellent story and details of the period are accurate and believable.
The author has a degree in Medieval History from Oxford.
Great deal
Book received in good condition
If you like mystery and a little gothic horror this is the story for you. It's Brother Cadfel meets Dracula. If that is something you are interested in buy this book now......Go on ,what are you waiting for.
The supernatural plus the pilgrims on their way toe Canterbury are a perfect mix. I have always enjoyed the Canterbury Tales. Mr. Doherty adds new and different twists to the tales told by those on the journey. This is the first in the series, though not the first one I read... The mix of history and fantasy is just right. The characters are three dimensional and you become vested in their tale and the snippets you learn pf their own lives. Kudos to Mr. Doherty.
I'm surprised this story hasn't hit the silver screen! It has a vivid medieval setting and a fast moving plot with a story within a story based on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Fans of mystery, the supernatural ( the ever popular vampires a.k.a. Stroigi), adventure and romance will not be disappointed. I've only read two books in this series and each tales stands well on it's own, however, Doherty has cleverly contrived a story arc that makes reads the entire series an irresistible choice!
I have read all the Canterbury Tale series that our library had to offer. They didn't have this one and I just had to read it. If you like P.C. Doherty's style of writing you will enjoy this book. It's the knight's tale about strigoi or vampires. It isn't the same old, same old vampire junk you see everywhere. I have to confess that I had built it up in my mind to be a lot better than it was. I'm still glad that I bought and read it. Doherty refers to the knight's tale frequently in his other stories and you will want to know what he's talking about.
I like Doherty's Canterbury Tales series. For those who haven't heard of it here is a short description. The characters from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales each tell a tale on the way to Canterbury. Chaucer records their "daytime tales" and Doherty records their "nighttime tales" i.e. horror, mystery or thriller type tales. Doherty isn't bloody minded and his tales are good reading. Some of the characters are disgusting--the miller, for one. All the characters seem to have some sort of past connection that they are unaware of until they hear another traveler's tale. I'm interested to see what the past connection will turn out to be.
