Some of the names and roles are copied from their story, such as Xa, the servant. Scorned museum curator goes on her own tomb raid, with the help of her newfound friends. It's all very dramatically described (board room drama, treachery, murder, opium, jungle attacks) with very cliche love stories, two women find two men to love) and very inconsequential. I only appreciated the research done for the book. Probably a B-movie about the same subject would be more convincing (and more fun, I am afraid).

Having bought the book after reading all the "fantastic" reviews I found myself deeply disappointed. The characters - for me at least - appeared ill-formed and unsympathetic. The whole tale is stuffed to the brim with "adventures and, consequently, lacks depth and credibility.
For someone who enjoys a quick light read, it has its advantages and its saving grace - again in my humble opinion - are the vignettes of Oriental vintage.
By the time I was in the last section of the book I couldnt wait for it to finish, and if I hadnt been reading it for book club I doubt that I would have bothered. I felt no empathy for any of the characters except perhaps Clothilde and the local Cambodians, but they were only minor to the story in any case. The romance made no sense and was consumated far too quickly. The relationshop between Simone and Irene was just annoying. I think the author was trying to be PC with her outcome but I cringed everytime she used the word coolie as part of narrative and not as part of someone's speech. Not cool. The plot was kind of interesting but not all that believable. I was tempted to give 1 star but the author does a good job in describing the settings, although I found the foot bridge crossing scene confusing. I will not be reading the obviously planned sequel.
I really do not know much about Asia. I have always enjoyed the pictures of the various countries, I never thought I would want to visit. As I have got older, reading about or seeing a movie about Asia satisfies my interest. I am sorry that so many of the names of those fascinating countries names have changed. This is a well written book and I will certainly look for more of Kim Fay.
A Map of Lost Memories is a trip every reader who enjoys historical fiction should read. A fabulously well written book and story not soon forgotten. Kim Fay has carefully crafted a tale of mystery and intrigue with characters that could have stepped out of the pages of history. to share their story of avarice and deception. A pager turner that left me wanting more..
The story takes place in various places with several people as part of that time and place. They are seeking a fortune or an end to a story or a something of great value that changes as the flickering of light through blowing leaves. I can't be more poetic or grounded. I loved the book, it rattled every cage of feelings I have known in my own life. It is a wow of a read. I hope to read more of Kim's writing in the future.
It's been a while since I read it, but I don't recall any violence or explicit sexual scenes. I loved the historical setting, the love of Khmer culture in the novel, the strong characters and how well developed the plot was. It kept me fully engaged.
I am not one of those pretentious reviewers who believe they must include a synopsis of the novel. Redundant, as a synopsis is part of the description included by . That aside, I found this novel to be drenched in texture and layered in imagery. It does exactly what a novel should ... it whisks the reader into the world created by the author. It is not plodding or slow although I do admit that there are some threads which deserved more attention or were left hanging, but then I've yet to read a book in which all threads were perfectly woven into the story and tied up with a bow. The ending, while not the expectation set in the beginning, is still oddly satisfactory. I'm rather bored with period pieces these days and approached this one tentatively, but I got it for free, so why not read it? Pleasantly, it did not feel as though I was personally being dragged kicking and screaming through a laborious version of a bygone era. There were certain concepts which seemed a bit implausible but that is the best thing about a book ... it doesn't necessarily have to be completely plausible. A highly recommended read.
