This book first inspired me to get me into Steampunk. I loved having a nerdy guy who was also courageous, adventurous, and a bit swashbuckling. I wish she'd write more nerdy, brave guys. I've been waiting YEARS for a sequel and heard another is on the way SOON! So excited! I loved how strong Octavia was instead of being a babbly woman. A nice change!

Imagine a modern programmer and sister drawn into an alternate era where steam is the forced used to make things move. A combknation of pirates, low technology, sword fighting, flying boats (ships), and kings. Where your greatest roll playing is experienced but it is real. Adventure, comedy, mystery all rolled up into one.
First I want to start by saying that Katie is in my top 3 favorite Authors. I bought the book because I was looking for something to read and I felt sure that coming from Katie that it would be her typical "can't put it down". This book was NOT good. In fact it was horrible. Most every book I have read by Katie has been a page turner, I typically read them in a few sittings. I had to FORCE myself to read this. Literally took me weeks make myself finish it. I am all for trying new things, but if you are a usual Katie reader you will more than likely be disappointed with this one. Sorry Katie, Stick to the good stuff girlfriend.
This was my first trip on the Steam-punk ship and I couldn't wait for it to end. The story had all the elements but didn't combine to make the book worth my time or my money. As a book store owner I hoped to be able to put this in my customers hands with a solid recommendation but that's not going to happen! In the beginning I couldn't tell if I was in the past or in an alternate reality. Then the plot jumped around and the point of view left me confused and re-reading paragraph after paragraph. At some points the sex between Jack and Octavia seemed to take over the story but the other plot lines lagged behind. I was definitely not a fan of this book.
I enjoy Katie MacAlister's books fantasy and historical. She generally writes with wit, humor and keeps her plot moving at a fast pace. Although most of her novels fall into the "Romantic Fantasy" genre, I find her worlds 'believable.' I found "Steamed A Steampunk Romance" hard to believe and very much doubted that the the hero and heroine would fall in love under the book's circumstances (I don't want to spoil the book for anyone so no details.) I also had to very much concentrate on the plot to keep thngs straight.

Because Ms. MacAllister has entertained me over many books, I'll give this series another try if there is another installment.
I'll start off by saying I found the book to a quick read despite the 300+ pages. That is actually saying something because I normally read rather slowly.
I also loved the steampunk world Katie MacAlister has created. Yes, it used a lot of cliches of the genre, but they were still enjoyable. The politics that she set up gave some depth to the world between the emperor, rebels, and air pirates.
But that is all this book had going for it. It was heavy handed at every turn, particularly in how it got the main character into the steampunk world. Every character was wholely unbelievable and the way they interacted was almost painfully broken.
Considering it is a romance novel I could have forgiven all of that if it at least had good romance, some sort of emotional context, or some good sex. But no, it fails at that too. Who in the world would be turned on be constantly interrupting scenes to have a calm analytical discussion of what's going on between the man and woman?
Love Katie's books and this was a really fun read
